I was sent a story from the HMN newsletter and man is it aimed right at me.

A lot of people only think of Mercury as mid 90’s Sables that were almost identical to the Ford with a different grille (and maybe some wheels).

But the fact is, you can get a great classic Mercury at a STEAL and show up to a car show in something unique that really stands out without paying Chevelle money.

It’s a really cool article that talks about the need Ford had for Mercury, the portion of the market it filled and how you can find amazing deals on classic Mercurys. Just like I did.

A couple pictures of my 1968 Mercury Montego MX for your time:

You know better than that my friend, in 1968 under the hood Mercury always had Ford Branded Valve covers:

My originals before the upgrade.

I would be 100% behind black valve covers that said Mercury Rising in red.

Maybe I’ll just get a custom air cleaner lid that says it. That would be bad ass.

The original air cleaner said Mercury *God Head Logo* 302 - 2V on it though (see above because Kinja decided it should be up there and not below)

What year is that, I’m surprised by the shade of blue on the block/valve covers/painted power steering pump and that it has a Ford logo on the air cleaner.

that was a 68. It was a weird one, semi restored, white with a red vinyl top and red interior. Seen in the back here when 505’s drive was winning hard

Yeah that’s definitely not all original under there. My bet is he couldn’t find a Mercury Air Cleaner Lid and didn’t know the power steering pump isn’t supposed to be painted, nor is the oil fill/breather cap. Wrong upper radiator hose, wrong radiator cap. And I’m pretty positive that light blue paint is wrong.

I mean, don’t get me wrong, bad ass car I’d love to have it and it appears to be in good condition under there. I think he was going for restoration and didn’t know what he was doing. At this point he should’ve done what I’m doing and go aftermarket under there.

hence why after he died his daughter had to sell it cheap. The Mercury purists werent having it. I see flex hose and run unless it is cheap

DAMN that pic of your fleet, you were riding right.

I would have snagged it in a heart beat. It’s not “correct” but it’s clean and looks functional. Could very, very easily make that a proper resto. Like...Some paint, Some paint thinner and a new decal for the top lid, some hoses, man it would be like 400 bucks to make this thing stock.
